(dc y1 ? p 7) sedimentologists and spelunkers

sometimes i really love the nonsense at the bottom of spam emails that spammers (or their prose generators) write to get through spam filters. here's one i received today. i read it several times. it's beautiful.

"Grandfathers could learn from lawyers. Gurus compose lovely sonnets about bag ladies. Housewives donate their bodies to perverts. Piano players donate their bodies to optical illusions.
Why do people think that things are suspected of being gals? Boy scouts prefer the company of psuedo-intellectuals. Sedimentologists are worse than spelunkers. Everyone knows that the seismo-zombies fold, spindle, and mutilate barnyard animals."

(dc) the monday after

hi.

if you came to the house concert slash birthday party friday night, thank-you, and i hope you had fun. the cassetes and the trophymen were both really great, and we estimated somewhere between 150-200 people were there over the course of the night.

we were attempting to record the show, but we had some problems with the rental equipment and the recordings don't sound so great. nevertheless, it was a historic evening, and we'll do our best to spruce up the recordings to give to the bands.

lots of my favorite people weren't there, but many of them were, and it was a wonderful mix of young energetic people. one of my favorite parts of the evening was when three or four people were clustered on my couch with my computer trying to figure out using belief.net whether they were Bahá'ís or not.

i promised i wouldn't tell anyone, but i couldn't have done it without the electric prince's help - he did the sound and was my partner in clean-up. also, andy and carla helped set up the food, loretta brought over a bunch of food from another friend's party, and nick and jay provided the venue and also bought and served alcohol upstairs (as a baha'i, i didn't want to buy or serve alcohol in my own place, but i knew people would bring it and it was nice to have most of that happen upstairs). jose took pictures, but that might have been before things really got rocking. when he gives me the photos, i'll post them in the friday aug 19 slot.

for all of you that missed the concert, we'll try to do it again sometime soon.

and now, back to work.

(boston -> trenton) stuck

we were finally defeated at 1am in trenton, having left boston at 4pm, not to arrive in NYC until 11:30. simonetta and i were both exhausted after the exciting weekend and it was storming, so we found a hotel and drove the rest of the way to DC this morning.

lesson: always take the train to boston (or a plane, i guess), no matter how expensive it seems. train is best. train is best. train is best.

(dc) help with lasik?

does anyone know anyone that knows an expert in lasik surgery? like, perhaps, a doctor that might know another doctor that would be willing to give a good friend of mine the REAL (unbiased) scoop on what the risks are? or someone that has found a good source of REAL data on the rate of problems associated with the surgery? my friend has had great difficulty finding data that he could use to quantify the risks. can you help?

(dc -> philly) on the track again

chelsea was in philly this week for work, so i went up to meet her for dinner and catchup. the train is really great - much easier than a plane for doing work. plenty of space, power outlets next to your seat, and fewer rules. i hope amtrak can get through their woes and stay in business.

(dc) it's official

paypal will not reimburse me the $1442 that was stolen from me by a ukranian thief who stole someone else's credit card and talked me (the sucker) into shipping him an SLR camera. it's a big loss, and uncannily symbolic of the loss of friendship that is associated with the camera (an even bigger loss). quite fitting, but painful lessons learned. note to self (a la "million dollar baby"): always protect yourself.
